Our Big Question: Do all heroes wear capes?

Religion, Values and Ethics

We will be looking at 'The Bible. Parables. Santes Dwynwen day. We will celebrate Chinese New year, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, St David's day and Easter. We are learning to recite the Lord's prayer in Welsh.


Humanities

In Reception and Year 1, pupils will begin to develop a sense of Cynefin (belonging) through familiar, meaningful learning experiences. Children will learn about local heroes, explore daily and seasonal weather, and celebrate key cultural and religious events including St Dwynwen's Day, Chinese New Year, St David's Day, Mother's Day and Easter.

Pupils will explore simple timelines through stories about superheroes and their own experiences. They will learn about people who help us through visits and role play, and explore familiar places in the local area, as well as begin to learn about Wales and the wider world.

Language, Literacy and Communication

In Reception and Year 1, pupils will take part in a rich and engaging literacy programme that supports early reading, writing and oracy skills. Children will enjoy regular individual and shared reading sessions, including Welsh stories and songs, supported by a range of Welsh language activities. Daily phonics sessions will develop early reading and sound recognition skills, alongside regular listening activities to support understanding.

Pupils will explore mark-making and early writing through a range of engaging activities, including drawing, labelling and simple sentences. Children will be introduced to a variety of writing purposes, such as cards, posters and simple information texts. Oracy skills will be developed through talk, role play and storytelling, with Makaton used to support communication. The term will also include key literacy events such as World Book Day.

Cymraeg

Incidental Welsh is built into all aspects of the school day. We positively promote the advantages of bi and multi lingualism in the 21st century.

We will focus on traditional and modern Welsh stories.

We will be practising language patterns and using language mats to help us, We will also be singing songs and reading books using our Tric a Chlic reading scheme.


Mathematical Development

This term, Reception and Year 1 pupils will develop their mathematical understanding through practical, play-based and real-life learning experiences. Children will focus on counting, number recognition, matching and sorting, and simple addition and subtraction.

Pupils will explore shape, measure and pattern through hands-on activities, including comparing length, height and capacity. Mathematical language and reasoning will be developed through discussion, problem-solving and exploration during continuous provision.

Health and Wellbeing

This term, pupils will take part in a range of activities to support their physical, emotional and social development. Children will enjoy regular P.E. sessions focusing on movement, balance and coordination, alongside daily opportunities for outdoor play.

Wellbeing will be supported through the My Happy Mind programme, circle time and discussion-based activities that help pupils recognise and talk about feelings. Pupils will learn about keeping healthy, including healthy eating and hygiene, and develop independence through practical activities such as simple food preparation.

Expressive Arts

Pupils will take part in daily Welsh songs and rhymes using Ffa La La resources to develop confidence in the Welsh language. Children will explore creative activities through art, music, movement and imaginative play.

Throughout the term, pupils will design and create their own superheroes using a range of materials. They will explore colour, texture and pattern, take part in music-making and celebration activities, and develop fine motor skills through cutting, joining and simple sewing. Expressive arts will be delivered across the curriculum, including through RVE.

Science and Technology

This term, pupils will develop early scientific skills through hands-on exploration and play. Children will explore changes in materials, such as melting, identify different light sources, and learn about their bodies and how to stay healthy.

In digital learning, pupils will develop early technology skills by using Bee-Bots and simple programmable toys. They will learn how to use iPads safely, explore age-appropriate apps, and take photos of their learning to share on Seesaw. Pupils will also begin learning about Internet Safety in an age-appropriate way.

Digital Competency

Pupils will be logging onto Hwb and using write, paint, chart, branch, turtle, Beebots, Rugged robot and mix tools to develop their ICT skills. This will include saving their work and opening a saved file. 

We will use search engines to find out information about books.

All children will learn to use the SeeSaw app and other apps linked to phonics. 

Homework

Please read with your child at least three times a week at home and record this in their reading records.

Develop key maths skills such as: telling the time, reading scales, and learning number facts such as number bonds.

'Topic show and tell' (each child will do show and tell twice this term).

Our show and tell will be about our topic of books.

All children are to bring in topic-related items only.

If your child misses their slot due to absence, they will have the opportunity to show and tell the following week.
